Who would have known that HVAC systems can be so complex.
There are so many parts and nooks and crannies in an HVAC system that neither I or my husband can figure out. The other day I was home alone watching our three small children when all of the sudden it seemed like the house was becoming much more colder than normal. I figured that my husband set the temperature down lower to save on energy costs. However when I walked over to the thermostat that is mounted on the wall near our kitchen I saw that the temperature was set to what we normally have it at: 73 degrees. We like to keep our house a bit warmer due to having two smaller children in our home. Today was certainly not the day where our house was nice and warm. It was cold and the thermostat read 62 degrees. I immediately called my husband at work and told him that the furnace had not kicked on even though it was set to a normal temperature. He told me that this has happened before in our house and it was due to a clogged air filter. I went and opened up the compartment to our HVAC system where our air filter is located, it was clogged. According to my husband, our HVAC system has a sensor that tells the thermostat that something is wrong or clogged and it will automatically stop all messages from the thermostat to the HVAC system. I replaced the air filter and turned our thermostat on, our furnace was functioning normal again.
