My parents called the other day to say that they needed to come and visit.
Now, I love to have them come to town, see the kids, and spend time with us, but, I was worried. There was something in my mom’s voice this time that made me think this was not an typical visit. There were no major holidays, as we had just had Christmas and New Year’s and I had a gut instinct that something was up. Now, I live in Southern Florida and we enjoy the weather no matter what time of year it is. Even hurricane season usually leaves us unscathed. My parents live up North and have always said they would never move anywhere else because they like the mild summers and change of seasons. When they arrived, they threw me for a loop, because they said they would house hunting while they were here. I asked my dad why he had made such a sudden decision as I had just talked to them during the holidays and all was great. He said that the recent deep freeze that they had been under for week had really taken a toll on Mom’s health. She spent her days huddled by the woodstove all the while complaining about how cold she was. The energy bills were through the roof and dealing with ice, day in and day out, was getting to him too. He and mom used to shovel the driveway together so it was easier, now, she barely went outside. Even the HVAC system in the house was having difficulty keeping up with the sub-zero temperatures all the time. They keep saying that it is like an old fashioned northern winter. Record breaking lows and no sun to be seen. I guess that can get to anyone.
