Hated the night the heating quit

Once the HVAC technician got out and got the gas furnace heating again, I asked him a question

It really didn’t have to be the way it was. I can remember my daughter trying so hard to roust me from a deep sleep that night the HVAC equipment went down. I work a very physical job and I sleep like a ton of bricks. And normally, it takes me some minutes just to get myself oriented and get my feet on the floor after I awake. But that night, my child was telling me how cold she was. We normally lower the thermostat to the mid or low 60’s when the temperatures are in the single digits. So it can feel a bit cool for sure when it’s that raw outside. But when I opened my eyes and could see my daughter’s breath as she spoke, I knew we had a problem. That night, I came awake nearly instantly. My tiny girl kept asking me if the heating was ever coming back on and I was trying to assure her that everything was alright. Unlike me, my wife is able to wake up and think completely rationally from the jump. She grabbed my daughter and they went to find the space heater so they could stay warm in our room. I went to check the gas furnace in the basement. It didn’t take me til the foot of stairs to know that I’d be calling for emergency HVAC service. Just the smell of a thin acrid smoke made me certain that I needn’t even try to restart the gas furnace. So I called the HVAC professionals. Once the HVAC technician got out and got the gas furnace heating again, I asked him a question. He confirmed what I was hoping he wouldn’t. Sure enough, had I gotten the heating maintenance done, he would have caught the problem and that night didn’t have to happen at all.
