I am happy having a boiler as my home’s heating system. A boiler uses water to move heat energy, avoiding a lot of the drawbacks of a forced air furnace. It is a closed system, using the same water without bringing in and introducing contaminants into the air. The operation is virtually silent and because the heat is radiated into the air rather than blown in, it doesn’t rise straight up to the ceiling. The boiler provides a very gentle comfort without drafts of stratification. The heat is clean, gentle and doesn’t overly dry out the air. Another perk of a boiler system is the opportunity for zone control. We’re able to set independent temperatures in each room. My only complaint was that our boiler was linked to outdated radiators. The radiators were rather large, not only taking up valuable living space but requiring me to adjust the furniture to accommodate them. During operation, the radiators became dangerously hot and I worried over my kids and our dog getting burned. They also looked extremely unattractive. I lived with those ugly radiators for quite a few years, believing that replacing them would be an expensive and messy project. I finally decided to get a free estimate from a local HVAC contractor. The technician provided recommendations for streamlined, wall-mounted radiators. They don’t get hot to the touch and are quite modern-looking. I was surprised that making the replacement was not overly expensive and the increased efficiency of the new units has helped to recover the investment. Plus, the new radiators have greatly improved the comfort of the home.
