When my husband and I first bought our house, we looked into a security system.
- I really wanted to have alarms on the doors, sensors on the windows and cameras around the outside.
At that time, the neighborhood wasn’t the safest. However, when we got an estimate on the installation it involved drilling holes in the walls and ceilings to run the wires. We weren’t thrilled with that idea. The equipment was bulky and unsightly, and we knew that it wouldn’t be long before the security system became outdated. We decided against the investment and gave up on the idea of a security system. It wasn’t until just recently that it occurred to me that like everything else, these systems had probably seen some improvements. The development of wireless technology has changed everything. Modern security systems install without any damage and include all sorts of convenient features, such as automated door locks, motion-activated lights and motion activated cameras. We can access all aspects of the system via apps on our smartphones from virtually anywhere. We can see who is knocking on the door, unlock the door and speak to the person even if we are not on the premises. Plus, when there are updates available, we can simply download the improvements. We’ve gradually added to the security system, including glass breakage sensors, monitoring by the security company, smoke detectors, carbon detectors and moisture sensors. We are now considering upgrading into a full home automation system. We would like to bundle together the security system, our appliances, lights and sound system into a single hub.
