Backyard is appliance graveyard

When I was a kid, we had every sort of animal you can possibly imagine.

We always used to joke that our house was more like a zoo than a typical suburban home. At one time, we had five cats, three dogs, a rabbit, reptiles, birds, hamsters, and god knows what else. We also had to contend with all of these losses when the time came, which was less whimsical. That’s how we wound up with a viable graveyard on our property over the years. It was creepy, but nice to stay so close to all our best friends. Well, as an adult I have something similar going on these days, except it’s the remains of my long lost home appliances that populate my backyard. I guess I never knew what to do with broken down toasters, dishwashers, and AC units, and somehow all the cleaning machinery and temperature control equipment wound up being a giant landscape fixture over time. I look out back and see my old furnace, no longer pumping out hot air, but still collecting warmth from the pounding sun. A family of singing birds lives inside of the front panel of the heater, enjoying the convectional heat. Moving west, there’s my ancient dehumidifier from college. I used to live in a basement, and had to use the air quality machinery to remove all the excess moisture from the air before I developed mildew in my bed again. Next, you see the prehistoric window AC unit from my first home. It housed a family of mice back in the day, and spread their feces all over my house while pumping out cool air. I sure like to think that the same family of mice has lived in the old AC all this time, producing new generations of cool critters and bringing new life to my graveyard.

Shifting attention to HVAC school

Having worked at a university for many years, I quickly learned something about young people in our society today… many of them absolutely should not be in a place of higher learning.

  • I’m not trying to be a butthead, I’m just saying that it isn’t everyone’s calling in life.

There are plenty of people who don’t like book learning, don’t desire an advanced degree, and don’t take education seriously. That’s all totally fine, but they need to acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses instead of taking the path more travelled. That’s why I would try to gently redirect their focuses to other fields, when it seemed like a good idea. One student, in particular, was not meant for the traditional classroom. I was pretty sure he belonged at a trades school, and I highly recommended he looked into the HVAC industry. See, he loved to work with his hands, and he was always fiddling with the temperature control device in class rather than paying attention. I would find him pressed up against the thermostat, taking off the front panel and rewiring the system. Several times, I discovered him taking the metal plate off our large air vents and cleaning out the air ducts inside. Once I even found him on the roof, examining the massive central air conditioning system locked up there. I started assigning him extra readings about HVAC technician coursework and positive projections about the future of the ventilation business. I know it was perhaps manipulative, and the school wasn’t very happy when he dropped out without warning… But it was clear that he was meant for temperature control system installation and repair, not financial accounting.

Making that heat money

It’s a pretty bleak outlook when everyone you know is highly educated, independently brilliant, and somehow laboring 3 ordinary tasks trying to get by.

This is the curse of my generation, I suppose, and we’re all in this together to some extent.

That being said, I’m absolutely tired of this particular curse already, and I have a long time in the laboring world ahead of me; At this point, I work a full time task and two part time gigs just trying to support myself – literally just trying to keep hot through the winter. These afternoons, my fourth task is entirely serving to spend money off my ungodly energy costs every month, because lord knows I can’t afford to live in a well insulated house with a laboring Heating, Ventilation & A/C system. Instead, I reside in a tiny little ramshackle home, a solid 45 minute commute from the city, and barely make enough money to spend money for rent and my daily utilities. The heating and cooling system, alone, takes well over 20% of my check several months. Think about that – the cost of keeping a one family room house hot through the winter time and relatively cool through the summer time is a second of my income. I’ve tried having the landlord inspect the Heating, Ventilation & A/C system, because clearly there is a major issue with the efficiency of the heating and cooling equipment, if not the HVAC ductwork itself. However, this grumpy seasoned man just thinks I’m a groaning and moaning millennial with no leg to sit on. I can tell you, if my energy expenditure doesn’t improve, soon I absolutely won’t have an arm or a leg.

Thank god Grandpa was handy – fixing my own AC

There are some things in early life that can either make or chop you.

For instance, having unstable parents as a small child will lead to a plethora of troubles down the road in most cases.

Similarly, having a super well adapted mom and expansive supportive family members might just lead to giving you a big leg up later on in life. That’s how it has been for me, anyways, thanks to my excellent mom and her father, especially. My mom was good at teaching me how to be financially responsible and stretch my buck. My Grandpa was truly handy and knew how almost everything in the home worked. Thanks to him, I do too. He’s saved me thousands in my lifetime – heck, almost $1200 just last week when my AC system broke down. It was ungodly hot out that week – well over 90 degrees every afternoon with silly humidity, and of course, my whole cooling system crapped the bed. I knew that I couldn’t afford to call out a professional HVAC professional during this heat stroke; surely they were charging and upscaled fee for their emergency services; With this in mind, I called up all the lessons that grandad taught me out in the yard, hunched over the outdated central AC unit. He told me how the compressor and motor needed to be delicately cleaned and cared for. He taught me the dangers of freon. And he walked me through the process of cleaning and inspecting my own air ducts for detriments. With his wisdom on my side, I managed to repair my own cooling system. It only took a few nights and a few extra trips to the hardware store.

Grandma broke heating system from 1000 miles away, smart thermo

I swear to god, my Grandma is one of the most demanding and entitled humans alive, but she is constantly insisting that people drop everything and attend to her every whim; not because she’s too outdated to be capable, but simply because that’s who she’s constantly been! Her entire life has been managed by other people looking out for her, and without my Grandpa around, she counts particularly on my mother and her other daughters, and if it isn’t one thing, it’s another, then even when she packs up and moves to FL to endure the cold winters, no one is free from her reign of terror

In fact, she undoubtedly managed to make it worse from a distance this year! Apparently my Aunt made the mistake of having a smart control unit installed in my Grandma’s home last year, then my Grandma was constantly complaining that she didn’t know if the home was okay or the heat was staying on, so my Aunt decided to give her the means to monitor the indoor air quality from 1000 miles away, but unfortunately, my Grandma doesn’t have much else to keep her busy when she’s out lounging in the FL sun each winter, this means, she wound up using the smart control unit app on her phone roughly 10 times a afternoon. She consistently monitored the air temperature in her home up north and modified the heating system settings to compensate for perceived air quality swings; Fast forward to two weeks into her seasonal trip, and her outdated heating system was broken down; Not only did the smart control unit create even more obsessive material for my Grandma, but my mom had to go handle the professional HVAC appointment and upgrade of a whole modern central furnace without so much as a “thanks.”

New heating

Commercial Heating, Ventilation, and A/C inspector

I am currently at the end of my rope with work. I swear to you, I work all afternoon, every afternoon separate from breaks. When I sit down to sleep at night, my work troubles follow me to bed. I sit awake and worry about what I’m doing right and wrong, and all the tasks I need to complete immediately. I don’t guess I can keep up with this level of stress, so I’m looking to make a large career transition. Honestly, I didn’t know what field I wanted to go into for a long time, so I reMEd in the same tortuous position for several years after this realization. But as of last week, I honestly feel like the world delivered me a solution. I was driving home, busy as usual, when I got caught in traffic right in front of a brand current trades university. They had advertisements outside for all sorts of current Heating, Ventilation, and A/C programs that were under development, and I was immediately interested in what the heating and cooling industry would look like. After that, I got online and started looking for more information on the current ventilation certification. Soon, I found that there were more option in the heating and cooling field than being a straight-forward Heating, Ventilation, and A/C journeyman servicing local residences. In fact, it is possible to be an expert in the field of commercial Heating, Ventilation, and A/C inspection for public locales and big corporate institutions! The job entails traveling to crucial locations, accessing the current heating and cooling plan, and running diagnostics to determine if the Heating, Ventilation, and A/C system was current or in need of routine maintenance. In this position, I will have far less work to do and more freedom to make my own schedule. I’m enthusiastic to meet local company owners and contribute to their high quality indoor air.
