Studio needed HVAC, ductless was the best way to go

When I was younger I thought that life looked very bleak.

I didn’t want to be an office slave or tethered to a desk all the time. I wanted to help people, but I wanted to do it all on my own terms. I surely never thought I would be independently employed while making a difference in people’s lives. But it’s happened, largely due to a podcast that I made. To this day, podcasting is one of the most important things that I do every day. Unfortunately, there are some start-up costs to doing it well. Quickly, I realized that my heating, cooling, and air quality control system needed to be upgraded rapidly in order for my podcast sound quality to be clear and crisp. I heard early on that there was unfortunate interference on my recordings from the central heating, cooling, and ventilation system turning on and off during the lengthy recording of my episodes. At first, the sound of the AC running in the background was fairly subtle. But then, my cooling system started to get louder with wear and tear over the summer. That’s when my listeners started to complain about the poor sound quality. Then, I did not have cash to invest in expensive heating, cooling, and ventilation machinery and professional HVAC appointments. So, instead, I thought it would be a good idea to build a separate studio which could be without any heating, cooling, and air quality control equipment sounds. Unfortunately this natural air quality control situation wasn’t working out. I got so sweaty during recordings that listeners could hear me choking on humid air. That’s when I finally figured it out and got a mini split ductless HVAC system. The thing is so small and silent that it even works for recording podcasts in a shed.

Studio without HVAC makes me lose customers

For 5 years now I have been working on my life’s work with full commitment.

I have always wanted to become an adoption writer and advocate.

Surprisingly, I actually found a way to make it all happen. Mostly, through a podcast that I wrote, and produced all by myself. Today, podcasting and helping families with adoption is one of the most important things that I do with my time. Unfortunately, there are necessary costs for doing it well. One day, I realized that my heating, cooling, and air quality control system probably needed to be fixed in order for my podcast sound quality to be amazing. I was noticing that there was interference on my recordings from the loud heating, cooling, and ventilation system turning on and off throughout my recordings. Over time, my heating system started to get louder and I started getting more nervous about the HVAC system. By that point, I was also opening a consultation business to help even more with adoption questions. Of course, for either of these jobs, I really did not want to invest in expensive new heating, cooling, and ventilation machinery. So, I thought it would be a good idea to build a studio which could be far away from the distracting central heating, cooling, and air quality control equipment. I turned my shed into a brand new recording and consulting studio and called it a day. It’s amazing for avoiding the HVAC noise pollution. However, I can’t say that my clients really appreciate sitting in a shed without any air conditioning or heating as we talk about adoption options. Looks like I need more investment money.

I’m an expensive human to date, high temperature standards

I absolutely cannot live in a house that doesn’t have amazing indoor air quality control equipment because I am very sensitive to fluctuating air temperatures, drafts, and airborne contaminants

When people are getting to know me it seems like they are often blown away by the shallow surface details that they quickly pick up on. From the outside, I seem to be a very attractive and capable human being that anybody would want to be friends with. I understand why they have this impression from the description that you might read on paper. However, you need to understand that I have many flaws like any other human. Probably even more so. For starters, I am not an easy person to get along with, especially when you’re talking about living together. When it comes to dating and living together I know that I’m a pain in the ass. My difficulties start with the central heating, cooling, and air quality control system and expand from there. For starters, I am obsessed with indoor air quality and air Temperature control. I absolutely cannot live in a house that doesn’t have amazing indoor air quality control equipment because I am very sensitive to fluctuating air temperatures, drafts, and airborne contaminants. I need to have a smart thermostat that’s connected to modern and energy-efficient HVAC equipment if I am going to be spending any amount of time in that environment. I don’t do well with unpredictable air temperature or failing air quality, and my moderate indoor allergies do not appreciate any airborne contamination in the air at all. When people tell me that I seem like a real catch, I usually just laugh and tell them to wait for my HVAC critique.

Bees are coming in through the vents

This time of year is particularly dangerous for me.

If you live in the same area that I do you’ve probably noticed that things are extremely intense outside. Don’t get me wrong, the outdoor climate has finally chilled-out since our extremely hot and humid summer season. That is a nice bonus for this period of the year. However, with the gradually decreasing outdoor temperatures and decreasing humidity comes a whole new problem. Bees. For a month or two every fall we have insanely aggressive yellow jackets that start swarming every outdoor location. It’s difficult to accomplish anything outside as you try to prepare for the cold winter season because you are constantly fending off irrationally angry insects who want nothing more than to sting you. I think they noticed that the air gets cold and go into survival mode for the winter. Unfortunately, this irritability results in a lot of unnecessary stings as they try to find warm places in your home to nest. It’s bad enough that they have been trying to crawl in through the tiny gaps in my doors and windows which need to be resealed and re-insulated. However, it has gotten much worse since they started infiltrating my central heating and cooling system. Apparently, there is an opening from the HVAC system to the outdoor exhaust vent that the yellow jackets have managed to pass through. I found this out the hard way yesterday when I saw about a dozen yellow jackets emerging from my air vents and discovered their growing nest in my ductwork. I guess they like my heating system. I hate this time of year.

We even have the same smart thermostat and settings

I’m really not the type of person who is easily impressed by other human beings.

I know, this is a snotty and elitist thing to say.

I’m not proud of my stance on other people, but I am generally frustrated by them. I don’t find everyone to be interesting and I don’t think everyone has worthwhile things to say. In short, I’m difficult to get along with and I prefer to just spend my time alone. That’s why it was absolutely shocking when I accidentally met someone who might be a life-changer. I don’t know what to say, other than this human and I are way too similar for it to be coincidental. We have the same outlook on everything in life, all the way down to our central heating, cooling, and air quality control equipment. I know, air quality doesn’t seem like an important area of discussion when you’re first getting to know someone, but we both find indoor air handling device maintenance and management to be rather important. In fact, we are both fairly obsessed with maintaining high quality indoor air, accurate air temperature control, and low monthly utility bills. This conversation only ever emerged because we also care a lot about the same smart thermostat and temperature programming settings. Early on in our conversation we realized that we’re both operating the same temperature control units with the same eco-friendly temperature settings. We have so much in common that I’m shocked we didn’t use the same heating and cooling repair shop for the thermostat installation. There’s only one reason for that – we live on opposite sides of the country.

Already worried about the holidays, annoying family

Does anybody else get particularly stressed out during the month of September? For some reason, I have many recollections of this month of being particularly anxiety inducing for me.

I think it’s difficult because the weather is beginning to change and I never quite know what to expect.

Every week seems like it could be the last round of nice weather before winter starts to settle in. This puts a lot of pressure on every single thing that I do. I feel like I need to be outside enjoying the bright Sunshine, warm air, and decreasing humidity before the horrors of winter fully engulf the area. I’m not excited at the idea of using my central heating system in the form of my forced air furnace for the foreseeable future. I also don’t enjoy shaking in my boots because of the frigid air that’s around me everyday. The worst part is, I start thinking about the upcoming holidays. I don’t particularly enjoy having my family over at my house so they can mess with my belongings and my central HVAC system. Every year it seems like my family members show up with the sole purpose of messing with my thermostat. They are constantly talking about the uncomfortable indoor air, the drafts, and the hot and cold patches that they experience. As a result, they harass my smart thermostat and drive up my energy bills to extreme degrees. As if I wasn’t already worried enough about winter, my furnace, and my ability to pay high energy bills… My family makes the whole cold air season as stressful as possible.

Running out to buy a fan

I’m really not the sort of person who enjoys running errands.

If I can stay at home all day uninterrupted to get my work done I am perfectly happy.

I don’t enjoy feeling like I need to pack up, put on clothes, and get myself out the door for any particular reason. This is one of the main reasons why I am a committed online shopper and I prefer to work remotely. I can get everything done on the computer and life basically takes care of itself. Unfortunately, sometimes even I forget important tasks that require me to leave the house. For instance, I forgot that I needed to worry more about my indoor air quality this weekend than usual. Since I’m typically the only person in the house I don’t pay much attention to the central heating, cooling, and air quality control system. I put my smart thermostat on the eco temperature setting and leave it there as much as possible. However, this weekend I’m having an important house guest… my new guy is coming to visit. Unfortunately, with this extra human in the house my temperature settings are not adequate. Particularly, when we’re talking about sleeping comfortably at night. It turns out, having another body in your bed makes things rather warm. After our first night together, I was a sweaty mess without the high powered AC that we apparently needed. That hot situation is the last thing I want to endure again… but I totally forgot about the indoor air complication until now. Looks like I need to run out and buy a commercial-powered fan before he arrives.

Pretended I cooked a lot… ventilation fan outed me

Sometimes I am baffled by the way that people jump into romantic relationships.

It seems like folks are more desperate to have a romantic partner than to have someone that they’re actually compatible with.

This is why people talk about the honeymoon phase and the cautionary tales of making sure your new boyfriend or girlfriend actually is who they say they are. If you ask me, I’m not sure why anyone would bother to lie about themselves in the first place. Eventually the truth will come out and you will have to deal with a much bigger mess now that someone is relying on you. I guess I should have realized this myself when I accidentally gave my new boyfriend the idea that I was a big fan of cooking. Trust me, it didn’t take long before my heating and cooling system revealed to the truth – I have no idea how to make anything except a fine peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You see, my guy came over for a nice dinner that we were going to cook together. It wasn’t long, however, before the indoor air was completely contaminated with burning hot smoke and toxic fumes. As I attempted to cook I managed to burn everything, ruining the indoor air with smoke and noxious chemicals. My boyfriend quickly asked how to utilize the ventilation fan so we could remove some of the toxic air before it circulated through the entire central HVAC system. Unfortunately, I had no idea. I’ve never used the ventilation fan because I’ve never cooked before. As we fled the house, covering our mouths and noses to protect from the harmful airborne contaminants, I had to laugh and tell him the truth.

Taught kids about HVAC systems; daughter doesn’t take any garbage

Sometimes I look at my children and I just feel so proud.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s no major feat to reproduce and I don’t think that people should pat themselves on the back for bringing additional humans into the world.

That being said, I happen to think that I created and raised some particularly fine little humans myself. When they were kids I didn’t spare my children from a lot of important life lessons. This extended all the way to budgeting and maintaining for your high quality indoor air handling devices. I never wanted my children to feel like they were blindsided by a high energy bill or confused by the normal operations of a central heating, cooling, and ventilation system. I figured it was important to have some basic HVAC maintenance and repair skills under their belts before they ever moved out on their own. This is the only way to ensure that they aren’t dealing with ridiculously high utilities and continual HVAC repair appointments. Let me tell you, I am so glad that I gave them this HVAC crash course. My daughter called me yesterday to tell me that she just had the most infuriating heating and cooling repair appointment of her life. Apparently, this HVAC tech tried to force her to upgrade her entire central cooling system rather than making the necessary repairs. Thanks to my early education and heating and cooling devices my daughter wasn’t taking any of it. She promptly fired the HVAC tech and hired a new HVAC company for a second opinion. This time, the air quality control specialist simply did his job without trying to take advantage. That’s my girl.
